Fakespot Chat: Mozilla's AI Solution to Online Shopping

Meet Fakespot Chat, Mozilla's latest AI marvel, designed to make your online shopping experience a breeze.

This AI chatbot is the fruit of Mozilla's acquisition of Fakespot, a startup known for employing AI and machine learning to weed out deceptive product reviews.

The irony of using AI to combat AI-generated fake reviews isn't lost on us. However, Fakespot Chat aims to enhance trust in online shopping, not diminish it. It follows in the footsteps of Fakespot's generative AI feature, Pros and Cons, which summarises product advantages and disadvantages, eliminating the need to sift through numerous reviews.

Fakespot Chat, currently in testing, allows shoppers to interact with an AI chatbot about a product they're considering, much like asking a salesperson in a brick-and-mortar store. The chatbot uses AI and machine learning to sort through product reviews, distinguishing real from fake, to answer user queries. Your chat session information is saved to enhance the experience for others, but worry not, no personal information is required for the chatbot to function.

Fakespot Chat can be accessed via the Fakespot Analyzer or from an product page using Fakespot’s browser extension. Once the analysis is complete, Fakespot Chat appears on the right-hand side of the analysis page, ready to assist with your product queries.

This initiative is part of Mozilla's broader commitment to responsible AI, including a $30 million investment in creating an independent open-source AI ecosystem. Mozilla acknowledges that Fakespot Chat may not always hit the mark and welcomes user feedback for improvement.

As Saoud Khalifah, founder and director of Fakespot at Mozilla, puts it, "Our goal with Fakespot Chat is to reduce your product research time and lead you to better purchasing decisions."
