Google Clarifies: Gmail Emails Aren't AI Training Material

In the digital age, rumours spread faster than a cat video, and Google is currently quashing a big one. Recent viral posts have suggested that Google uses your Gmail content to train its AI models, urging users to opt out of “smart features” to protect their privacy. But hold your horses! Google says this isn’t the case.
Google spokesperson Jenny Thomson assures us that these claims are misleading. The tech giant hasn’t changed your settings, and Gmail’s Smart Features—like spell checking and order tracking—don’t involve using your emails for AI training. So, no need to panic about your emails being fed to the AI beast!

However, it’s always wise to double-check your settings. A Verge staffer noted they were unexpectedly opted back into Smart Features. Google recently updated its settings, allowing users to manage smart features for Google Workspace and other products like Maps and Wallet separately.
These Smart Features enhance your Gmail experience by tracking orders and adding flights to your calendar. While enabling them means agreeing to let Google personalise your experience, it doesn’t mean your emails are being used to train AI, according to Google.
In a nutshell, while it’s good to stay vigilant, there’s no need to fear your emails are being used for AI purposes. Google reassures us that our inboxes are safe from AI prying eyes—at least for now!
