YouTube Music is hitting the high notes with a fresh initiative to keep things crystal clear in the world of tunes! As AI-generated music floods streaming platforms, YouTube Music has rolled out a new labelling system to help listeners easily spot tracks created with the help of generative AI. These labels will pop up on the player page, offering insights into how AI contributed to the track's magic—be it in composition or vocals.
But wait, there's more! These labels aren't just for YouTube Music; they’ll also grace the main YouTube app. YouTube has teamed up with music partners and used its own detection tools to identify AI-generated music. On their help page, they outline three designations: "Fully Gen AI" for tracks entirely crafted by AI, "Partly Gen AI" for those with a mix of AI and live elements, and "No Gen AI" for tracks tweaked with tools like Auto-Tune.
As AI-generated music becomes the new rock 'n' roll, other platforms are tuning in with their own strategies. Apple Music is set to launch "Made With AI" labels, Spotify has its AI labels and music spam filter, and Deezer is filtering out AI tracks from recommendations and withholding royalties from dodgy streams. TIDAL offers similar options, allowing listeners to disable AI-generated recordings.
YouTube, however, is all about transparency rather than restrictions. Their labels aim to inform rather than exclude, allowing AI-influenced tracks to still rake in royalties. Plus, YouTube is dabbling in AI-powered music creation with Dream Track, letting creators experiment with AI-generated versions of artists' voices. So, whether you're a fan of AI tunes or prefer the human touch, YouTube's got you covered!
