Google’s AI Overviews, the nifty feature that answers your health queries, is turning to YouTube more than any medical site.

A recent study has revealed that YouTube, the second most visited website globally, is the top-cited source for health information in Google searches. This might sound like a plot twist, but it’s true!

Researchers at SE Ranking found that YouTube accounted for 4.43% of all citations in AI Overviews, leaving behind reputable medical sites. This is a bit like asking your neighbour for legal advice instead of a lawyer. The study, conducted in Germany, analysed over 50,000 health queries and found that YouTube was cited 20,621 times, compared to 14,158 for the next most cited source, NDR.de.

Google insists that AI Overviews are designed to highlight high-quality content, including expert YouTube videos from hospitals and clinics. But here’s the kicker: while 96% of the top 25 YouTube videos cited were from medical channels, these represent less than 1% of all YouTube links used by AI Overviews. So, the rest? Well, they could be anything from a doctor’s advice to a wellness influencer’s musings.

The study’s findings have sparked a debate on the reliability of AI Overviews, with concerns that visibility and popularity might be trumping medical reliability. While Google defends its AI’s credibility, the research suggests that the risks are more structural than anecdotal.

So, next time you’re searching for health advice, remember that while AI is smart, a pinch of scepticism might be the best medicine!
