X Unveils Grok AI-Powered News Summaries

X, previously known as Twitter, is now harnessing the power of Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, to summarise trending stories in its Explore section.

This exciting development allows X's Premium subscribers to enjoy a quick overview of posts linked to each trending story on the For You tab in Explore.

The For You page, a favourite stop for X users, displays popular news and stories shared across the platform, tailored to your network. Now, with Grok's assistance, each story comes with a summary at the top, providing a snapshot of the topic.

For instance, a story about AI engineers facing burnout might start with: "AI engineers are facing burnout and rushed rollouts due to the competitive race in the tech industry, as companies prioritise investor satisfaction over solving actual problems." A cheeky message below the summary reminds users that "Grok can make mistakes, verify its outputs."

While summarising trends isn't a novel concept, the use of an AI bot to handle the summaries is. Previously, Twitter manually added headlines and descriptions to some of its trends, but with Grok's Stories, all top news on the For You page gets a summary.

X's integration of Grok is a strategic move to entice users to purchase premium subscriptions. Grok, a snarky and "rebellious" AI, stands out from other AI chatbots due to its exclusive and real-time access to X data.

However, there are concerns. Grok's summaries are based on X conversations, not the article text, which could lead to skewed representations of the news. Despite this, some see potential in this unconventional approach.

AI news summaries are becoming increasingly common, with startups like Arc and Particle also offering similar services. This trend raises questions about the future of news sites as page views potentially decrease due to AI summaries.

In response, some news publishers are partnering with AI providers. For example, OpenAI recently announced a partnership with the Financial Times. X, on the other hand, cleverly circumvents this by summarising the conversation around the news, not the news content itself.

Grok's Stories are now available to Premium X subscribers, with access starting at $8 per month.
