Video of the Week: Prompt Theory

OK, let's get meta (not Meta, that's for old people).

This video shows characters that have been created by AI laughing about the fact that people think that they might have been created by AI. It's a really fascinating jump because the vids, made with Google's amazing Veo 3, look and sound so realistic.

It's called 'Prompt Theory', the belief (articulated by the characters with varying degrees of amusement / anger) that they aren't real and were just dreamt up by someone typing some words into a prompt. It really gets you thinking about what it might be like if ... you know ... we were just pawns being pushed around by some higher power without any genuine free will of our own. What if all this is planned? What if writing these words isn't something that I'm doing voluntarily right now, it's all been predestined by some external force ...?

Or, it's just an amusing video that shows the power of AI to make you think. Lots is already written ( ... voluntarily ...????) about AI dumbing us down. I think this is a great way of actually showing that it can be a lot deeper (in a positive way) than that.

People worried the calculator would make us all forget how to do basic adding-up - and that this would make us more stupid. Turns out that it's freed us from having to bother and now we're in a world where AI is here - which may or may not be correlated.

As the tech improves further - and man, is it incredible already! - we're going to get even smarter about what we spend our time on. I hope that a lot of it will be used to create thought-provoking entertainment like this - it's really powerful.
