A recent survey by Acorn, a tenants' union, reveals that 70% of renters fear eviction if they request energy efficiency improvements.
The study, involving 252 participants, highlights the precarious situation many tenants face in "deficient housing stock."
Acorn supports the Labour government's anticipated energy standards but warns that without tenant protections, these could lead to widespread displacement. The survey found that 90% of respondents reported structural defects like poor insulation and outdated heating, leading to high energy costs. This issue affects 54% of tenants, with low-income households hit hardest.

To cut costs, tenants often reduce heating to minimal levels, risking health issues like chronic winter illness and respiratory problems. Damp and mould are also prevalent, with 59% of respondents affected due to poor ventilation and insufficient heating.
Despite 91% of tenants desiring energy retrofits, 70% fear landlord retaliation, such as eviction or rent hikes. This fear spans all income levels, highlighting a widespread concern of "renoviction"—displacement through property improvements.
Acorn urges that tenant concerns be addressed alongside new energy standards to prevent rent increases and ensure housing security. For more details, check Acorn's full report here.
