In a bold move against Nvidia's dominance in the artificial intelligence (AI) market, major tech companies including Google, Intel, and Arm have formed a coalition called The Unified Acceleration Foundation (UXL).
Their goal? To eliminate the software advantages that have kept developers locked into using Nvidia's proprietary tech.
The UXL's plan involves developing an open-source software suite that allows AI developers to run their code on any machine with any chip, breaking free from Nvidia's hold. The project, which is expected to reach a mature state by the second half of this year, utilises Intel's OneAPI open standard. This standard aims to remove the need for specific coding languages and tools that tie developers to specific architectures, such as Nvidia's CUDA platform.

Nvidia, the first chipmaker to reach a $2 trillion market capitalisation, has been dominating the AI market with its superior chips, including the H100 and upcoming H200 GPUs. These chips, which require developers to use Nvidia's CUDA architecture, have been in high demand, resulting in scarcity. Meanwhile, rival companies are developing their own alternatives.
The UXL's initial focus is on AI apps and high-performance computing applications, but the group plans to eventually support Nvidia's hardware and code. To ensure the solution can be deployed on any chip or hardware, the UXL is seeking help from other chipmakers and cloud-computing companies, including Microsoft and Amazon. This move could significantly shake up the AI market, providing more options for developers and potentially challenging Nvidia's effective monopoly.
