Snap's New Move: Watermarks on AI-Generated Images

Snap, the social media service, has announced plans to add watermarks to AI-generated images on its platform.

The watermark, a translucent version of the Snap logo accompanied by a sparkle emoji, will be added to any AI-generated image exported from the app or saved to the camera roll.

Snap has stated that removing these watermarks will violate its terms of use. However, it's currently unclear how the company will detect the removal of these watermarks. This move follows similar steps taken by other tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, and Google to label or identify images created with AI-powered tools.

Snap currently offers paying subscribers the ability to create or edit AI-generated images using Snap AI. Its selfie-focused feature, Dreams, also allows users to utilise AI to enhance their pictures. In a recent blog post, the company explained that it visually marks AI-powered features, like Lenses, with a sparkle emoji for clarity.

Snap has also introduced context cards to AI-generated images created with tools like Dream to provide users with more information. In February, the company partnered with HackerOne to implement a bug bounty program to stress-test its AI image-generation tools.

This move towards improved AI safety and moderation comes after Snapchat's "My AI" chatbot sparked controversy upon its launch in March 2023. Some users managed to manipulate the bot to discuss potentially unsafe subjects. In response, Snap introduced controls in the Family Center, allowing parents and guardians to monitor and restrict their children's interactions with AI.
