Samsung's Smart Home Gets Smarter with AI

Samsung is turning up the heat on smart home technology, with a host of exciting new features announced at CES 2024. The tech giant is adding a sprinkle of AI magic to its SmartThings home automation platform, aiming to make Samsung homes even smarter.

The first of these exciting additions is the Now Plus dashboard screen, soon to be available on select Samsung TVs. This innovative feature springs to life as you approach, displaying information about your smart home devices and useful stats such as the current indoor temperature. A new 'quick panel' accompanies this, offering easy access to shortcuts for controlling connected devices and handy functions like finding your misplaced smartphone.

But the real showstopper is Samsung's new 'map view' for SmartThings, which mirrors Amazon's recently launched Map View. This feature provides an interactive map of your home, complete with the location of any smart home devices. Maps can be created manually, or automatically with the help of a photo of an existing floor plan or a lidar-enabled Samsung device, like the upcoming Ballie robot or the new JetBot robot vacuum.

Adding a dash of charm (or eeriness, depending on your perspective), the new SmartThings maps feature 'AI characters' that represent family members and pets. These animated avatars react to real-time conditions, for instance, appearing to sweat if the house gets too warm.

To generate these maps, you'll need the SmartThings app on a smartphone or tablet. Once created, they'll display on supported Samsung TVs, the screen of the Samsung Family Hub smart fridge, and Samsung's M8 monitors. With these enhancements, Samsung is certainly pushing the boundaries of smart home technology.
