Nvidia, the titan of AI hardware, is stepping into the thrilling world of humanoid robotics with its new platform, Project GR00T.

The announcement was made at their annual GTC developer conference, marking Nvidia's entry into one of the most debated topics in robotics today.

The humanoid form factor has been a magnet for venture capital, attracting substantial funding despite widespread scepticism. Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, describes the creation of foundation models for humanoid robots as "one of the most exciting problems to solve in AI today."

Project GR00T is touted as a "general-purpose foundation model for humanoid robots." In simpler terms, Nvidia is crafting an AI platform for the recent wave of humanoid robot makers, including big names like 1X Technologies, Agility Robotics, Apptronik, Boston Dynamics, Figure AI, Fourier Intelligence, Sanctuary AI, Unitree Robotics, and XPENG Robotics.

Nvidia's new platform will also support new hardware, including Jetson Thor, a computer specifically designed for running simulation workflows, generative AI models, and more for the humanoid form factor.

The company also announced two more key programs: Isaac Manipulator and Isaac Perceptor. Isaac Manipulator offers advanced dexterity and modular AI capabilities for robotic arms, while Isaac Perceptor focuses on multi-camera, 3D surround-vision capabilities.

The launch of Project GR00T signifies Nvidia's strategic move to accelerate the development of humanoid robotics. While the idea of "general-purpose" humanoid robots is still years away, Nvidia's initiative to democratise access for third-party developers could be a significant step towards bridging that gap.

The race is on, and Nvidia is determined to have a piece of the action in the exciting realm of humanoid robotics.
