Microsoft is shaking up the AI pricing game!
As AI usage skyrockets, Microsoft is leading the charge to ditch flat-rate subscriptions in favour of a more dynamic, usage-based pricing model. This means businesses will pay based on how much they use AI, alongside a standard subscription fee.
Why the change, you ask? Well, as AI becomes more integral to business operations, sticking to flat-rate pricing could hurt profitability. Microsoft’s cloud unit, including Azure, saw profit margins dip as AI tools like GitHub Copilot gained traction. To counter this, Microsoft introduced a new pricing plan where GitHub Copilot users are charged based on usage, with "GitHub AI Credits" kicking in from June 1.

But Microsoft isn’t stopping there! The tech giant plans to expand this pricing model to other products, including Microsoft 365. The new E7 bundle will offer a mix of Office software, security tools, and Microsoft 365 Copilot for $99 per user per month, with additional charges for exceeding usage limits.
While this consumption-based model could potentially cost more, Microsoft argues that the efficiency gains from AI tools will ultimately save businesses money. However, not everyone is on board. Some CIOs have expressed concerns, and competitors like Google are sticking to predictable per-user pricing.
So, will Microsoft’s bold move pay off? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure: the AI pricing landscape is evolving, and businesses will need to adapt to stay ahead of the curve!
