Meta Platforms is making waves by refusing to sign the European Union's new AI code of practice.

According to Joel Kaplan, Meta's global affairs chief, the code is an overreach that could stifle innovation and growth.

In a candid LinkedIn post, Kaplan expressed concerns about the legal ambiguities and overreaching measures that the code introduces for AI model developers.

The European Commission's final iteration of the code aims to enhance transparency and safety in AI technology, aligning with the AI Act passed last year. While some companies, like OpenAI, have agreed to the code, others, including ASML Holding and Airbus, have voiced their opposition, calling for a two-year delay.

Kaplan, who succeeded Nick Clegg earlier this year, argues that the EU's approach could hinder the development of cutting-edge AI models and limit opportunities for European companies. With his background in U.S. policy and experience in the Bush administration, Kaplan is no stranger to navigating complex regulatory landscapes.

As the EU's AI rules are set to take effect next month, the tech world watches closely. Will Meta's defiance spark a broader debate on AI regulation, or will the EU's framework prevail in shaping the future of AI in Europe? One thing's for sure: the conversation around AI governance is far from over. Stay tuned for more developments in this unfolding tech drama!
