Landlords Evict Renters in Their Thousands

Shelter's chief executive, Polly Neate, has raised alarms over the rising number of tenants being evicted from their homes in England.

Recent government data reveals that 2,830 households faced eviction by bailiffs due to Section 21 no-fault evictions between July and September, marking a 23% increase from the previous year. Additionally, 8,425 landlords initiated Section 21 eviction proceedings, the highest in eight years.

Neate argues that these evictions contribute significantly to the threat of homelessness, as they allow landlords to remove tenants with just two months' notice and no reason. She urges the government to enhance the Renters Rights Bill, which is approaching its Third Reading in the Commons.

Neate emphasises, "With renters being marched out of their homes in their thousands, passing the Renter’s Rights Bill and closing the book on the gross injustice of no-fault evictions can’t come soon enough." However, she warns that even after Section 21 is abolished, renters will still face insecurity due to potential rent hikes. To make renting safer and more affordable, she suggests capping rent increases during tenancies in line with inflation or wage growth.

Shelter also highlights that 60,000 renters have been forced out due to unaffordable rent hikes in the past year, underscoring the urgent need for reform.
