In the ever-evolving landscape of AI and education technology, Google Workspace for Education is stepping up its game with new security and AI detection features. These enhancements aim to create a secure and trustworthy learning environment, ensuring schools can innovate while safeguarding data integrity.

Google is introducing tools to help the education community verify AI-generated media. With the rise of generative media, it's crucial to determine whether content is AI-created. Enter SynthID, an invisible digital watermark that allows users to upload media to the Gemini app and ask, "Is this AI-generated?" This feature currently applies to images and videos, with plans to expand to audio files and non-Google models.

For instance, when a video of a golden retriever catching a frisbee is uploaded to Gemini, the app scans for the SynthID watermark. It uses its reasoning to provide context, revealing if both the audio and visual elements were generated by Google AI.

In addition, Google is enhancing admin controls to keep schools in command. New security features include:

  • Drive Ransomware Detection: If ransomware is detected on a computer using Drive for desktop, syncing halts immediately. Admins and users receive alerts, and files can be restored to pre-infection versions, preventing data loss and ransom payments.

  • SecOps Integration: Available to Education Plus and Education Standard users, this feature allows seamless forwarding of Google Workspace activity logs to the Google SecOps platform, enabling faster threat detection and efficient auditing.

  • Google Meet Access Controls: Hosts can now decide who views their live streams, including external participants, ensuring controlled access.

Google remains committed to making Google Workspace for Education both helpful and secure. Keep an eye out for more updates on security and AI integrity in the coming months. For all announcements, check out their Launch Guide.
