Unveiled at the recent I/O developer conference, Veo is Google's newest generative AI video model.
It's set to revolutionise the film industry by creating 'high-quality' 1080p resolution videos in a multitude of visual and cinematic styles.
Veo is a bit of a cinematic genius. It understands filmic terms like "timelapse" or "aerial shots of a landscape". This means you can feed it text, image, or video-based prompts, and it'll produce videos that are more consistent, coherent, and realistic.
Google's DeepMind CEO, Demis Hassabis, revealed that Veo's video results can be refined using additional prompts. Google is also considering features that will enable Veo to produce storyboards and longer scenes.
However, don't rush to your director's chair just yet. Google is currently inviting selected filmmakers and creators to experiment with Veo. This will help determine how it can best support creatives and ensure creators have a voice in the development of Google's AI technologies.

For those eager to try Veo, some features will be available in a private preview inside VideoFX in the coming weeks. Google also plans to add some of Veo's capabilities to YouTube Shorts in the future.
Veo is the latest in a line of video generation models from Google, following Phenaki, Imagen Video, and Lumiere. However, Veo is touted as the most advanced, with a better understanding of video content, real-world physics simulation, and high-definition output rendering.
But Google isn't the only player in this field. OpenAI's Sora, released three months ago, is already being pitched to Hollywood and is set to be released to the public later this year. With Sora already having a head start, it'll be interesting to see how this new competition plays out.
So, filmmakers and creators, watch this space. The future of film could be in your hands sooner than you think!
