The Financial Times has taken a leap into the AI world with its new chatbot, Ask FT.
This generative AI chatbot is designed to answer questions from subscribers, but with a twist. Unlike other AI bots, Ask FT derives its responses from the outlet's decades of published articles, providing subscribers with information that's steeped in the Financial Times' rich history.
Ask FT is currently only available to a select few hundred paid subscribers in the FT Professional tier. This tier is designed for business professionals and institutions, making Ask FT a potentially invaluable tool for those needing quick, reliable information.
The chatbot is powered by Claude, a large language model developed by Anthropic. However, the FT is keeping its options open. Lindsey Jayne, FT's chief product officer, stated that the outlet is 'model agnostic' and open to exploring other models that best meet their needs.

Despite being in its beta phase, Ask FT has shown promise in providing accurate, relevant responses. It can answer questions about current events and delve deep into the FT's archives for broader queries. However, it's not without its inconsistencies, which the FT is actively tracking and refining.
Ask FT represents the Financial Times' commitment to evolution and innovation. As Jayne puts it, "I don’t think you’d get to be a 135-year-old institution if you aren’t constantly evolving and meeting these moments." The chatbot is still in its beta phase, with the FT continuing to test and evaluate its performance.
