Expedia, the online travel giant, is set to launch an AI assistant named Romie, designed to take your travel booking experience to new heights.
Romie is no ordinary bot. Trained on a combination of in-house and OpenAI models, Romie is a versatile assistant, capable of helping users search for hotels, build itineraries, and make small tweaks to their plans. What's more, Romie is sociable, easily included in iMessage chat groups or available for a one-on-one chat on WhatsApp.
Imagine planning a trip with your friends on iMessage. With a simple mention, Romie can jump in, summarise your itinerary, or suggest restaurants, making group travel planning a breeze. Even better, Romie provides direct links to your Expedia app for a seamless transition from chat to booking.
But that's not all. Expedia is also introducing a smart search on its site, allowing users to describe their ideal hotel instead of fiddling with filters. Want a rooftop with a sea view? Just type it in, and let the AI do the rest.

These exciting features are currently being tested with a limited audience through Expedia's EG Labs program. Expedia is harnessing data from various sources like AccuWeather and Yelp Network to enhance Romie's capabilities, keeping travellers updated on flight changes or weather shifts.
Expedia's move to integrate AI into its core feature set follows a successful experiment last year with an in-app travel planning experience using ChatGPT. It's clear that AI is becoming a key player in the travel industry, with competitors like Booking.com and Airbnb also introducing AI-powered features.
Despite the crowded market, Expedia is confident that Romie will stand out. According to Rathi Murthy, CTO of Expedia Group, Romie's ability to play multiple roles - travel agent, personal assistant, concierge - and its integration into popular chat channels like iMessage and WhatsApp, sets it apart.
Soon, Expedia will also launch a cross-date price comparison tool, an AI-powered help page, and guest review summaries as part of its spring update. So, buckle up, travellers! With Romie, your travel planning is about to get a whole lot easier.
