Meta’s recent policy update, which came into effect in January, has effectively banned third-party AI assistants from WhatsApp. The Commission argues that this move could stifle competition, and they’re not having it!
Meta, however, isn’t backing down. A spokesperson claims the EU’s concerns are unfounded, arguing that there are plenty of AI options available beyond WhatsApp. They insist that the WhatsApp Business API isn’t the be-all and end-all for AI distribution.
This isn’t the first time the EU has taken a stand against big tech. In 2025, Apple, Meta, and Google faced hefty fines for various breaches. Clearly, the EU is not afraid to play hardball when it comes to enforcing competition rules.
As the investigation continues, all eyes are on Meta to see how they’ll respond. Will they maintain their stance or make concessions to appease the EU? Stay tuned for the next thrilling chapter in this tech saga!
