In the ever-evolving world of AI, change is the only constant—except when it's not! OpenAI, the brains behind ChatGPT, faced quite the uproar after retiring its beloved 4o model in favour of the shiny new GPT-5.

Users were not amused, likening the switch to losing a dear friend. Yikes!

Nick Turley, OpenAI’s head of ChatGPT, recently shared insights into this kerfuffle in an interview with The Verge. He admitted that underestimating users' attachment to 4o was a bit of a "whoopsie." The plan was to simplify choices for the 700 million weekly users, but it turns out, simplicity can be a double-edged sword.

While the majority of users aren't tech-savvy Redditors or Twitter aficionados, they do appreciate a bit of predictability. Turley emphasised that future changes will come with a heads-up, ensuring no more surprise goodbyes to favourite models. The goal? To keep the warmth of 4o alive in GPT-5 and beyond.

CEO Sam Altman chimed in on X, promising that GPT-5 would be less "annoying" than its predecessor. Meanwhile, 4o has made a comeback as an opt-in model for paying users, proving that sometimes, you can have your cake and eat it too.

Despite the initial backlash, ChatGPT's popularity has soared since GPT-5's release. Turley noted the challenge of catering to both power users and newcomers, each with their own expectations. But fear not, dear users, OpenAI is committed to making future transitions as smooth as a well-oiled chatbot. Predictability is the name of the game, and OpenAI is ready to play!
