ChatGPT Android App Gets Thinking Mode Upgrade

OpenAI is ending the year with a bang, rolling out a much-anticipated update to its ChatGPT Android app.


Say hello to the new Thinking mode! Previously, this feature was only available through a browser, but now Android users can enjoy the same brainy benefits.


So, what's the big deal? Well, the original Thinking toggle was a bit of a shortcut, routing responses through a Standard thinking time, which was quicker but not necessarily better. Now, users can choose between Auto, Instant, or Thinking modes, giving the AI more time to ponder complex queries and deliver more accurate answers.


This update aligns with the desktop experience, where "Extended Thinking" has been a favourite for those tricky questions. If you're using ChatGPT on Android, make sure your app is up-to-date to access this new feature. Once updated, you'll find the Thinking mode in your chat settings, ready to enhance your mobile experience.

But here's the catch: this feature is exclusive to ChatGPT Plus users. Free users will have to stick with the old Standard mode for now. Alongside this update, OpenAI has introduced a new formatting block feature. Now, when you ask ChatGPT to draft an email, it does so in a neat formatting block, allowing for easy edits without starting from scratch.


This update is a delightful end-of-year treat for ChatGPT users. OpenAI has been in a "code red" state, battling competitors like Google’s Gemini 3 and Nano Banana. With updates like GPT-5.2 and ChatGPT Images, they've been working hard to win back users. And it seems to be paying off, as ChatGPT continues to hold its ground in the AI arena.
