Apple is stepping up its AI game with the introduction of Visual Intelligence, a new feature set to debut in iOS 18.
Announced at Apple’s September event, Visual Intelligence aims to help users instantly learn about their surroundings by identifying real-world objects through their iPhone cameras.
Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, introduced the feature, highlighting its seamless integration into the new iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models. Enabled by a new capacitive camera button called Camera Control, users can activate Visual Intelligence by clicking and holding the button while pointing their camera at an object of interest.

The feature leverages a mix of on-device intelligence and Apple services to provide information without storing images, ensuring user privacy. For instance, snap a picture of a restaurant to get its operating hours or point your camera at a flyer to automatically record details like the title, date, and location.
Federighi also hinted at the feature’s compatibility with third-party models, suggesting that users could search Google for a bike they spot or get help with study notes by simply taking a picture. This makes Visual Intelligence a versatile tool for various day-to-day activities.
Although Apple didn’t specify an exact release date, Visual Intelligence is expected to roll out “later this year” as part of the Camera Control feature. This new addition promises to be a game-changer, offering a built-in alternative to Google Lens and enhancing the iPhone’s utility in everyday life.
Stay tuned for more updates as Apple continues to refine and expand its AI capabilities, making your iPhone an even more indispensable tool for navigating the world around you.
