Apple Intelligence: Limited but Promising

Apple has finally unveiled its much-anticipated Apple Intelligence with the iOS 18.1 developer beta.

If you’re one of the eager beavers who signed up for the developer beta, you’re in for a treat—albeit a limited one!

Usage Limitations

First things first, the rollout is quite restricted. Initially announced at WWDC in June, Apple Intelligence is now available for iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and devices running on M1 chips. But there’s a catch! Your device must be set to U.S. English and, surprise, the region must be set to the U.S. too. Don’t worry, this won’t mess with your App Store region.

To join the fun, head to the new “Apple Intelligence & Siri” menu in Settings and tap on the waitlist. Brace yourself for a wait, as downloading the AI models might take a bit, and not all features will be available immediately.

Exciting Features

Apple is spicing things up with a new animation for Siri. You can now invoke Siri using text prompts by double-tapping the bottom bar. Handy, right?

For the wordsmiths out there, Apple Intelligence offers writing tools to proofread or rewrite text. You can even change the tone of your writing to “Friendly,” “Professional,” or “Concise.” Need to turn text into lists, tables, or summaries? No problem!

The Mail app is getting smarter too. It now provides one-line summaries of emails and prioritises important ones at the top of your inbox. Plus, smart replies make responding a breeze.

Focus Mode isn’t left out either. The new “Reduce Interruptions” mode uses AI to filter out non-essential notifications, keeping you in the zone.

What’s Missing?

Despite these cool features, Apple Intelligence still lacks biggies like ChatGPT integration and Image Playground. According to Bloomberg, Apple is ironing out bugs, so we’ll have to be patient for the full suite.

So, while Apple Intelligence is off to a promising start, there’s more to come. Stay tuned and keep those devices updated!
