As Amazon's smart assistant hits this milestone, the company is eyeing generative AI to breathe new life into its Echo devices.
Despite Alexa’s widespread adoption—found in 100 million homes across 400 million devices—the financial picture isn’t as rosy. Amazon’s devices division lost a whopping $25 billion between 2017 and 2021, with Alexa alone accounting for $10 billion in losses in 2022.
Amazon’s strategy of selling Echo devices at a loss has been akin to the razor-and-blades model, aiming for market saturation. While this approach has succeeded in getting Alexa into millions of homes, it hasn’t translated into profitability. The recent layoffs in the Alexa unit underscore the financial strain.

Alexa isn't alone in its struggles. Other smart assistants like Bixby and Cortana have faded away, and even Google Assistant and Siri have seen waning consumer excitement. However, both Google and Apple are doubling down on their AI initiatives, with Google integrating Gemini and Apple enhancing Siri through its Apple Intelligence initiative.
Amazon, too, sees generative AI as a game-changer for Alexa. Platforms like ChatGPT have shown the potential for natural language conversations, and Amazon previewed Alexa’s generative AI-powered future late last year. The goal? To make interacting with Alexa as natural as chatting with a human.
As Alexa enters its second decade, Amazon is keen to improve its conversational skills and overall usefulness. The next few months will be crucial in determining whether Alexa can secure another decade in our homes. With generative AI on the horizon, the future looks promising—but only time will tell if it’s enough to turn the tide.
