AI's Aerodynamics Revolution in Formula 1

In 2018, a fledgling software from Neural Concept, an AI-based startup, was instrumental in developing the world's most aerodynamic bicycle.

Fast forward six years, and the same technology is now being utilised by four out of ten Formula 1 teams.

Pierre Baqué, co-founder and CEO of Neural Concept, has seen his company grow from a small startup to a company boasting contracts with aerospace giants like Airbus and Safran. Today, Neural Concept is a 50-strong team, working towards a Series B funding round, and aiding historic F1 teams like Williams Racing in their quest for motorsport glory.

The core technology is Neural Concept Shape (NCS), a machine-learning-based system that offers aerodynamic suggestions and recommendations. It's a game-changer in the field of computational fluid dynamics (CFD), where highly trained engineers use advanced software suites to run three-dimensional aerodynamic simulations.

NCS is not just about 'cheating the wind'. It's also used in developing things like battery-cooling plates that, if made more efficient, can keep the battery at its optimal temperature without sapping too much energy in the process.

Formula 1, a global motorsports phenomenon, is the ultimate laboratory for these technologies. Parts developed with assistance from Neural Concept's software are running in this pinnacle of global motorsport.

Williams Racing, one of the most storied teams in Formula 1, is one of the teams that Neural Concept works with. Williams is currently in a rebuilding phase, and NCS is one of the tools helping it regain its competitive edge.

The ceaseless march of AI won't stop there. There is talk of artificial agents on the pit wall calling the shots for race strategy and even car setups. As for Neural Concept, the company is continuing to push deeper into the non-motorsport side of the automotive industry, working to develop more efficient electric motors, optimizing cabin heating and cooling, and even getting into crash testing.

From pedal bikes to Formula 1, it's clear that AI and aerodynamics are a winning combination.
