Instagram recently found itself in a bit of a pickle when hackers managed to outsmart Meta's AI-powered support chatbot, allowing them to hijack user accounts. Talk about a plot twist worthy of a tech thriller!
Over the weekend, Reddit was buzzing with users claiming their Instagram accounts were compromised. Even the Instagram handle for the Obama-era White House and the U.S. Space Force’s chief master sergeant John Bentivegna fell victim. Security researcher Jane Wong also reported her account was taken over, noting, “The password got changed without my knowledge.” Yikes!
So, how did these digital tricksters pull it off? The hackers used a VPN to spoof the target's location, sidestepping Instagram's automated protections. They then chatted up Meta's AI Support Assistant, convincing it to add a new email to the victim's account. A verification code was sent to the hacker's email, which they used to reset the password and take over the account. All this without ever needing the legitimate email address tied to the account. Sneaky, right?
Instagram spokesperson Andy Stone assured users that the issue has been resolved. However, the number of affected accounts remains a mystery.
In the ever-evolving world of tech, this incident is a reminder to stay vigilant and keep your digital doors locked tight. After all, you never know when a hacker might try to crash your social media party!
