In a move to tidy up the streets and enhance community safety, a UK city council has initiated a crackdown on letting boards after a court appeal was dismissed. The Labour council, responding to resident complaints, is taking action against letting agents in two areas notorious for their forest of 'To Let' signs.
The council argued in court that these boards were less about advertising available properties and more about promoting agency brands. Moreover, they claimed that the signs were inadvertently marking properties as potential targets for burglaries and anti-social behaviour.
A council spokesperson shared with Birmingham Live: “Our Property Licensing team is addressing the proliferation of letting agent boards due to long-standing concerns from residents and local stakeholders. These boards contribute to visual blight and over-commercialisation, impacting community cohesion and highlighting student properties as crime targets.”
Given the proximity to universities, the areas in question have a high concentration of privately rented housing, crucial for accommodating students. However, the rampant use of letting boards had become a persistent eyesore on residential streets.
This crackdown aims to restore the aesthetic charm of the neighbourhoods and ensure a safer environment for residents. As the council moves forward with enforcement, the hope is to strike a balance between necessary property advertising and maintaining community integrity.
