Britain is stepping up its game to tackle the growing risks posed by powerful AI systems. Announced on 12 October, the government is rolling out a suite of measures to strengthen national defences, ensuring that AI serves the British public safely and securely.
Building on successful pilots that identified over a thousand cyber vulnerabilities, the government is putting frontier AI to work, fortifying public services against potential threats. AI Minister Kanishka Narayan emphasised a whole-society approach to resilience, highlighting the importance of using British ingenuity to understand and defend against these powerful systems.
The Cyber Security and Resilience Bill is set to play a crucial role, considering stronger protections against AI threats. The government is also preparing for serious incidents involving autonomous AI agents, with rigorous evaluations of advanced AI models underway at the AI Security Institute.
Cyber Minister Liz Lloyd stressed the importance of being proactive in cyber security, as organisations worldwide face increasing threats. The government is scaling up AI projects to protect public services and progressing a Cyber Bill to bolster defences.
In addition, the government is working with the National Cyber Security Centre to develop new expertise and capabilities for responding to AI-related incidents. This includes exploring AI verification to ensure claims about AI systems stand up to scrutiny.
As AI continues to evolve, Britain is committed to harnessing its potential for good growth while remaining resilient to its risks. With AI at the heart of the UK’s G20 Presidency next year, the government is poised to lead the charge in AI safety and innovation. Cheers to a safer, smarter future!
