For gamers of a certain vintage (Playstation 2, 90's) the image above immediately evokes ridiculously late nights / early mornings attempting to get through another level of Doom II. This isn't a retro post, though - the video accompanying the image shows what AI has been able to do with the revered title.
By showing an AI repeated images of the gameplay, researchers have been able to train it to replicate part of the game - with no coding and no other articulation of what is required.
This is huge for gaming. Essentially, it brings this strand of entertainment / creativity into the same jeopardy as that felt by writers, videographers, musicians and film-makers. Give AI enough data and it can mimic creativity in gaming too.
It suggests that, in future, large parts of gaming might be created 'on the fly'; games may be less a templated experience of getting through levels of ascending difficulty to the Final Boss, than a highly-personal, unique experience tailored to your own preferred storylines.
It'll take a while. In the meantime, you can get all of the Doom titles on the Playstation 5 ...
