Oh, the joys of renting! Just when you think you’ve mastered the art of adulting, along comes the dreaded end-of-tenancy deposit drama.

A recent survey by Google has unveiled a rather alarming trend: nearly three-quarters of tenants aged 18 to 34 have kissed some or all of their deposits goodbye. The culprits? Those pesky scuffed walls, rebellious nail holes, and the ever-infamous dirty ovens.

Let’s break it down: a whopping 33% of tenants report losing between £500 and £999. Ouch! And it seems that 75% of renters are steering clear of repairs simply because they’re not sure how to tackle them. Who knew that a bit of DIY knowledge could save you a small fortune?

Interestingly, 26% of tenants would rather ring up their landlord or letting agent to fix even the tiniest of problems. Perhaps it’s time to brush up on those repair skills, folks!

The survey also highlights that 57% of tenants are most anxious about not getting their full deposit back when moving out. It’s no wonder, really, given the potential costs involved.

A Google spokesperson summed it up perfectly: “Handing back the keys at the end of a tenancy can be one of the most stressful and expensive moments for renters, with many losing hundreds of pounds for small, fixable issues.”

So, what’s the takeaway? Maybe it’s time to invest in a toolkit, watch a few DIY videos, and tackle those minor issues before they become major financial headaches. Your future self—and your bank account—will thank you!
