Microsoft's Keyboard Gets AI Button for Copilot

Say hello to a new key on your keyboard!

Microsoft is shaking things up by adding an AI button to its Windows keyboard. This move marks the first major change to the device in nearly three decades and signifies the tech giant's ongoing commitment to integrating AI technology into its products.

Dubbed the "Copilot key", this addition is part of Microsoft's ambitious vision for AI-enabled PCs. These advanced machines run on powerful chips capable of operating large-language models and AI-powered apps directly on the device, bypassing the need for cloud computing.

The introduction of AI PCs could potentially revitalise the personal computer market, which has experienced a slump post-pandemic. Research firm Canalys predicts a surge in the adoption of AI-capable PCs from 2025 onwards.

The new AI button will make its debut on some new Windows 11 PCs at the CES technology trade show in Las Vegas later this month. Microsoft plans to roll out the key more widely after February, with upcoming Surface devices also set to feature the button.

Launched in November, Copilot is a versatile tool that can perform a variety of tasks, such as summarising text and virtual meetings. It operates across Microsoft's web and productivity apps, making it a handy addition to your keyboard. So, get ready to welcome your new AI assistant, right at your fingertips!
