Google is shaking things up again! The tech giant is set to mix ads into its new AI-generated search answers, a bold move to adapt its revenue stream to the age of generative AI.
Last week, Google introduced AI Overviews that provide users with AI-generated answers to their queries. Now, the company plans to include ads within these overviews. This test could extend Google's dominance in search advertising into a new era.
Imagine asking Google how to get wrinkles out of clothes. Instead of just a list of websites, you get an AI-generated summary of tips, complete with a carousel of ads for wrinkle sprays. Genius, right?
Google announced plans to test search and shopping ads in these AI summaries. Although AI Overviews rolled out to all US English users last week, it’s still unclear how quickly ads will start appearing.

These AI Overviews aim to keep users from shifting to alternatives like ChatGPT or Perplexity. Integrating ads into AI Overviews is a significant part of Google's strategy to catch up with these competitors. Search ads are Google’s largest revenue generator, and even subtle changes can greatly impact its revenue.
Google shared few details about the new ad format. Ads will appear in a section clearly labelled as "sponsored" when relevant to the query and the AI Overview. Advertisers don’t need to take any action; their existing campaigns will automatically be included in the experiment.
Google's early testing showed that users found ads above and below AI summaries helpful. While Bing also shows product ads in its Bing Copilot search chatbot, it didn’t trigger any ads in tests.
Despite new search experiences, Google CEO Sundar Pichai remains confident that the company can navigate these shifts. With the growth of Google’s cloud and hardware businesses, the company’s revenue is becoming less dependent on search ads.
So, get ready for a new search experience where AI and ads coexist, making your queries even more informative and, yes, a bit more commercial!
