Curio's AI News Anchor 'Rio' Revolutionises News Consumption

📸 ModelProp / Midjourney

The future of journalism is here, and it's called Rio.

This AI news anchor, designed to offer readers a personalised news experience, is the latest venture from the team behind Curio, the AI-powered audio journalism startup. Launched at the recent South by Southwest Festival, Rio is set to revolutionise how we consume news.

Rio is not your typical news app. It scans headlines from reputable sources like Bloomberg, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post, curating a daily news briefing that users can either read or listen to. The goal? To keep users informed and engaged, while avoiding the echo chamber effect by presenting a variety of viewpoints.

What sets Rio apart is its interactive nature. It's designed like a social media story, with graphics and links to news articles that are narrated using an AI voice. Users can tap through the headlines, just like they would in an Instagram story. And if you're interested in a particular topic, you can interact with Rio in an AI chatbot interface, asking questions and diving deeper into the subject matter.

But what about the accuracy of the information? Curio assures that Rio's AI technology won't fabricate information and will only reference content from its trusted publishers partners. It also promises not to use publisher content to train a large language model (LLM) without explicit consent.

Rio's co-founder, Govind Balakrishnan, revealed that Curio users had asked Rio more than 20,000 questions since it launched as a feature in Curio last May. This prompted the decision to spin out the tech into its own app. Balakrishnan's business partner, Srikant Chakravarti, added: "Rio guides you through the news, turning everyday headlines from trusted sources into knowledge."

While it's too early to predict Rio's impact on the news industry, it's clear that AI is playing an increasingly significant role in how we consume information. As Curio continues to focus on audio news, Rio stands as a testament to the potential of AI in enhancing our news experience. The app is currently in early access, with a public launch planned for later this summer.
