Cleaning Costs Renters Millions Annually

New data from flat-sharing platform SpareRoom highlights the staggering financial impact of cleaning-related deposit deductions on UK renters.

A survey suggests that nearly two-thirds (63%) of renters have experienced deductions due to cleaning issues, leading to over £724 million in losses annually. These deductions often stem from properties not being thoroughly cleaned before tenancy ends, necessitating professional cleaning services.

The average deduction from deposits is £250, but 29% of renters faced deductions exceeding £500, and 16% had over £750 subtracted. Despite these significant losses, only one-third (34%) of those affected contested the deductions, with 41% of those who did manage to negotiate a reduction or cancellation.

Cleaning-related disputes also cause friction among flatmates. While 27% of renters use a cleaning rota, 28% have no system, leading to arguments for almost three in five (59%) renters. This is despite ‘similar standards of cleanliness’ being a top flatmate characteristic in a recent SpareRoom poll.

Only 17% of renters paid for a professional clean before moving out. Matt Hutchinson, SpareRoom director, advises that while landlords can't legally demand professional cleaning, thorough cleaning either by tenants or professionals can minimise deductions. Transparent communication between landlords and tenants can also help avoid surprise deductions.

SpareRoom’s research reveals the most dreaded appliance to clean is the oven, followed by kitchen cupboards and drawers. So, renters, grab those gloves and give your home a good scrub to save your deposit and avoid unnecessary stress!

By staying proactive and maintaining cleanliness, renters can safeguard their deposits and ensure a smoother moving-out process.
