It's that time of year again, when the Met Gala rolls out the red carpet for the biggest names in showbiz, all vying for the spotlight with their daring fashion choices.
This year, however, the real star of the show was something quite unexpected - AI deepfakes.
The Met Gala, known for its avant-garde extravagance, took an unexpected turn this year. A viral image of Katy Perry in a whimsical, woodland-like gown circulated on social media, amassing over 10 million views. The catch? The image was a deepfake. The telltale sign? The carpet colour. While the actual Met Gala carpet was a vibrant white and green, Perry's image featured a beige and red carpet.
But Perry wasn't the only one to fall victim to the deepfake trend. An image of Rihanna in a dramatically regal, garden-themed dress also made the rounds. With 2.6 million views, the image was debunked when People Magazine reported that Rihanna had to skip the event due to the flu.

The consequences of these deepfake dresses may seem minor, but they raise an interesting question. Could an AI truly capture the creativity and uniqueness that makes the Met Gala what it is?
Zendaya, a favourite for best dressed, was also caught up in the deepfake whirlwind. An image surfaced of her in a black leather gown and floral headpiece, which, surprisingly, turned out to be real. Zendaya had indeed walked the carpet twice in two different outfits.
This year's Met Gala was not just a celebration of fashion but also a reminder of the power of AI. It showed us that in the age of generative AI tools, we must be discerning viewers, questioning the authenticity of what we see. After all, in the world of AI deepfakes, not everything is as it seems.
