Yahoo Acquires AI News App Artifact from Instagram Founders

In a fascinating twist, Yahoo is acquiring Artifact, the AI news app created by Instagram’s co-founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger.

Announced on Tuesday, this acquisition is set to provide Yahoo's hundreds of millions of readers with a tech-forward edge.

Artifact, despite its powerful news recommendation tool, struggled to scale. Yahoo, on the other hand, has a massive reader base but needed a sprinkle of tech magic to stand out from the internet's myriad news aggregators. This acquisition is a perfect blend of technology and audience.

While the acquisition cost remains undisclosed, it's clear that Yahoo is more interested in Artifact's underlying tech than its team. Systrom and Krieger will act as "special advisors" to Yahoo but won't be joining the company.

Artifact, despite its short lifespan, had a profound impact on the AI news app market. The app's shutdown note sparked interest from several companies, leading to a series of conversations about the potential of AI in the news industry. Yahoo was one of those interested parties, intrigued by Artifact's content taxonomy and recommendation systems.

The acquisition will provide Artifact with a vastly larger audience than it could have ever achieved independently, with more than 185 million people visiting Yahoo News every month. This will allow Artifact's personalisation and recommendation tech to be tested on a grand scale.

The Artifact app will cease to exist once the acquisition is complete, but its underlying tech will soon start to appear on Yahoo News and potentially other Yahoo platforms. The integration will take time, but the potential to develop a personalised content ecosystem is promising.

As for Systrom and Krieger, they remain optimistic about the future of AI and are already contemplating new ideas. The acquisition of Artifact by Yahoo marks a significant step in the evolution of AI-powered news services, and we can't wait to see what's next!
